Student
Success Initiatives
OnPoint
Student Success Center is designed to support the at-risk student
in education. Its mission to develop and maintain Student Success
Centers; is one that will improve the quality of life for communities
across the United States. The OnPoint Student Success Centers
will bridge the gap between at-risk/disadvantaged student and
post-secondary education, by offering FREE exceptional programs
to assist the at-risk/disadvantaged student to excel academically.
We endeavor to promote post secondary educational services by
making opportunities available to the families of at-risk youth
that they might not otherwise have access to. We believe that
the success of students in education will lead to their professional
success and, in turn, create future opportunities for their
communities.
OnPoint Student Success Center is a new and innovative
program created to bridge the gap between at-risk/disadvantaged
youth and post-secondary education. Once an at-risk youth enters
post-secondary education, that individual now has opportunity
and is no longer at-risk. The youth in this program will be
well prepared by SAT/ACT preparation, tutoring, leadership workshops,
working as a team, exposure to travel outside of their environment,
and preparation for the post-secondary experience.
Unfortunately, minority youth scores on the SAT
are well below average and steadily decreasing. Many at-risk
students are afraid to take standardize test because they have
not been properly prepared. A large number of economically disadvantaged
families would love for their children to enroll in Kaplan,
Sylvan Learning Centers, and other for-profit academic programs,
but they cannot afford the cost of these companies.
The percentage of minority high school graduates
that enter post-secondary education is extremely low and is
steadily decreasing. According to the National Center for Education
Statistics, for the past 10 years, African American and Hispanic
students SAT scores are lower than all other ethnic groups in
both Math and Verbal. Only 60 percent of students graduating
from high school take the SAT or ACT test, and minorities only
make up 20 percent of the 60 percent. Centers that makes it
mandatory for all participants to take standardized tests and
the SAT test. By making this testing mandatory for our participants,
we are increasing that national statistics. This also ensures
that each participant has the opportunity of growth.
We are not only building educators, we are also
building leaders. Each participant is required to attend a leadership
conference developed by the OnPoint Student Success Centers
staff. Our goal is to join with organizations, and individuals
in a united effort to bridge the gap between the at-risk/disadvantaged
student and post-secondary education.
