Why
Support Student
Success Centers?
BRIDGING THE GAP
OnPoint Student Success Centers is an extremely
innovative way of bridging the gap between at-risk/disadvantaged
youth and post-secondary education. Realizing that you can’t
effectively help a child without also helping the parent, we
have a program that bridges the gap of effective communication
between the youth participating in our program and their parent(s).
We realize that many parents are frustrated with the effects
of working, raising children, planning for a future, dealing
with changing technology, and a host of other variable that
impact the family in today’s society. Parents have forgotten
the basics or many are simply convinced that they are inadequate
and incapable of getting the job done.
COST OR LOST?
We at OPSSC also feel that the money should not
place a barrier between any youth and the opportunity of educational
preparation. Minority youth scores on the SAT are well below
average. Many at-risk students are afraid to take standardize
test because they have not been properly prepared. A large number
of economically disadvantaged families would love for their
children to enroll in Kaplan, Sylvan Learning Centers, and other
for-profit academic programs, but they cannot afford the cost
of these supplemental educational services. We have broken the
barrier and bridged the gap by making our services 100% free
to the participants in our program.
IMPROVING THE NUMBERS
We are not only building brighter futures, we
are also increasing the national statistics of minority youth
that enter post-secondary education. The youth in this program
will be well prepared by SAT/ACT preparation, tutoring, leadership
workshops, working as a team, exposure to travel outside of
their environment, and preparation for the post-secondary experience.
WHO WILL HELP?
The counselor to student ratio throughout America’s
schools is incredibly low. According to the U. S. Department
of Education, and the National Center of Education reports show
that the student to counselor ratio is 477 (students) to 1 (counselor).
Based upon that number of students, a counselor could only spend
less than 3 hours out of the entire year per student. The problem
here is that each student needs individual attention. Teachers
can not afford to see each student individually, so who is there
to offer one on one attention.
PARTNERING WITH THE COMMUNITY
With your support and our program(s), the OPSSC
will get the job done. Our qualified staff will counsel each
individual student one on one, both on an educational and personal
level. We will also assist the parent(s) through our Parent
Success Program on methods/techniques to help improve the relationship
between parent and child, which results in the child having
positive feelings about self and positive relationships with
others.
